Really can't find anything to blog about but this idea struck me while I was browsing MummySG's forum and saw this problems tonnes of mummy faced!
Have you encounter your seniors or elderly people (Those aunties on streets / your parents / Parent-in-laws / relatives / or whoever!) told you that you should do this this this to your baby and insisted that you should do it because they did it during their time? Or maybe they think that you are too young (or maybe noob =X) so you should follow all their instructions?
So here's what I've encountered.
FEEDING WATER TO BABIES!
Those who are doing some research before breastfeeding or have heard about it should know that we need not feed our babies water as they can have all the fluid they need through our breast milk. So I pretty much insisted upon it since the very first day I have Reverie.
As you know from my labor post, MIL & my parents came and ask why never feed formula coz I have no milk. When I talk about colostrum then they say need to feed water next. That point of time I told them its not required and also because I don't want Reverie to have nipple confusion (later reject my nehneh I sure faint -.-)
After naggings by my mum and aunt (My aunt is friggin' fierce and firm that kind. But I love her alot coz she always bring me for shopping & she pays for everything =X), I pretended to feed Reverie water during the once or twice we've met and my mum just sneak some water to feed her while I'm not looking.
Have to thank god coz she definitely have no nipple confusion =X
So 3 days before, I dug out my book of "What to expect, the first year" by Heidi Murkoff (Definitely the best-est child care book ever) and chance upon this question being answered by the author.
"I'm wondering if I should give our daughter bottles of water instead of nursing her so often"
Sorry, but a bottle of water is no substitude - or supplement - for your breast right now. A baby who is exclusively breastfed gets all the fluids she needs from the breastmilk and that's exactly where she should be getting them from.
Not only doesn't she need supplementary water under normal circumstances, she shouldn't be offered any. First of all, bottles of water (particularly early on in breastfeeding) can satisfy her appetite and her need to suck, sabotaging nursing efforts. Second of all, too much water can dangerously dilute a baby's blood, causing chemical imbalances. This second potential problem also holds true for bottle-fed babies who are fed too much of water.
Though it's fine to give a little water to a bottle-fed baby in a very hot weather, it's not usually necessary. Giving an older infant (over age four months) small sips of water from a cup, however, is fine (they won't be able to take too much from a cup, only from bottle). Children on solids can handle more water, whether they are breastfed or formula-fed.
(Sorry if there are any typos as I've typed it out myself by referring to my book.)
So yeah, I almost choked myself to death while reading the line in bold! And immediately called my mum and tried to explain to her why we shouldn't feed my girl water but fail in terms of explaination because I dont know how to describe in Chinese (any help?) LOL! (But she stop bothering me to feed her water already!)
So now you people see. Can listen to everything lao ren jia says?
I seriously doubt so. Perhaps most of them but definitely not ALL of them! Use some common sense & some advance knowledge we have pl0x!
I really recommend Heidi Murkoff's books to all pregnant ladies and mummies! They held practical advises and sometimes the answers are pretty humourous, making it fun to read!
Pregnancy guide - What to expect, when you're expecting
Babies' first year guide - What to expect, the first year
Toddler's guide - What to expect, the toddler year (Haven't got it yet so not sure how good is it)
Anyway, thanks friends and readers for "pestering" me to blog as it motivates me much more. But currently I had no idea what to blog about. Ideas please? I know friends wanna have more entries about Reverie but what kind of entries? Details pl0x!
